Silver Cord

The Regina Silver Cord Program was created to encourage and recognize students for their service activities. These service activities, while helping the local community, also develop responsibility, citizenship, and leadership skills in the students involved with the program.

• Hours must be volunteer, you can’t receive money for the hours
• Hours must be pre-approved by the appropriate Silver Cord moderator
• Hours can’t be associated with any required school, class, or parish activity (for example: School-wide service day.)
• Hours must be performed for someone other than a family member
• Hours can’t be part of required school or court ordered community service
• No more than 25% of the required hours may come from a single organization or volunteer activity. Therefore, you need to have a variety of service experiences. 

Minimum hours needed to receive designation (cumulative from grades 7-12):

• Class of 2023 and beyond = 200 hours

(Note, this is a minimum requirement.  Students can report as many hours as they have volunteered.)

• By the end of 9th Grade - 50 hours
• By the end of 10th Grade - 100 hours
• By the end of 11th Grade - 150 hours
• By the end of 12th Grade - 200 hours

• Volunteering for community service organizations

• Student Ambassador Program (approved by advisor)
• Natural Disaster Cleanup
• Mow/Shovel for non Family member (has to be non paying)
• Catholic Worker House
• Vacation Bible School
• Concession Stand (if not required by coach/program)
• Fall Fun Festival
• Food Bank
• Regal Learning Program
• Fish Fry
• Volunteering at Free Lunch or local food pantries
• Volunteering for local Parish (clean-up, mass, babysit, etc)
• Assisting elderly or disabled individuals in their home
• School improvement projects
• Helping at hospitals, animal shelters, day care, and nursing homes
• Volunteering at school sponsored activities (games, concerts, etc.)
• Volunteer tutoring, including Regal Learning Program
• Volunteering to coach youth sports or activities
• Volunteer camp counselor
• Christmas Basket Project, approved by Christmas Basket Project Moderator
• Other activities approved by Silver Cord Program Moderator or school administrator

• Prior to each volunteer event students need to receive pre-approval by submitting their project to www.tinyurl.com/silverpa if the event is not from the approved list above.

• Complete a verification form for each service activity. The verification is found online @ online google form. Be sure to include your supervisor’s contact information.  Silver cord moderators will verify service hours with the supervisor.
• The silver cord moderators have the final decision if it counts towards silver cord hours.  If in doubt, ask you moderator.
• All hours must be submitted by May 15th of each calendar year. No hours will be accepted from previous school years.
• Students must accumulate the required number of hours and have all verification forms turned in by May 1 of their 12th Grade Year.
• Students must have completed (with verification forms tuned in) at least 150 hours by the start of their 12th grade year. 

Students in grades 7-12 who have made significant progress towards their goal will be recognized at the awards ceremony in May.

If all requirements and hours are met by May 1 of a student’s senior year, the student will receive a special certificate and a silver cord honor to wear at graduation.
